Are you looking to become a Portuguese tax resident in Portugal? There are a few steps to the process, but if you follow them correctly you can become a resident in no time.

In this article, we will provide the ultimate guide to become a Portuguese tax resident; covering the topics of providing proof of residency, obtaining a Portuguese tax number, registering as a tax resident. And finally, applying for the NHR status!

Proof of Portuguese residency

Before you can apply for NHR status, you must first establish proof of Portuguese residency; to prove you can legally reside in Portugal.

If you are an EU citizen, the process of proving Portuguese residency is fairly straightforward. You can request a Certificado de Registo de Cidadão da União Europeia (CRUE) at your local town hall in Portugal. This certificate serves as proof that you are a Portuguese resident.

However, if you are a non-EU citizen, the process is slightly more complex. You will need to consider which Portuguese visa you’re eligible for. Luckily, we have a legal team who can help you apply for the right visa!

These first steps lays the foundation for establishing your tax resident in Portugal, and ensures that everything is setup correctly; to prove your residency status.

Obtaining a Portuguese tax number

Obtaining a Portuguese tax number, also known as Numero de Identificao Fiscal (NIF), is an essential step in becoming a tax resident in Portugal. Whether you are planning to live or conduct business in the country, you will need this unique identifier.

When applying for a NIF number, don’t detail your Portuguese address straight away; because this will create a strict deadline to apply for the NHR status.

Once your application is submitted, the process typically takes a few days, to receive your NIF. This number will be essential for various financial activities in Portugal, including opening a bank account, registering a vehicle, or buying a property.

Registering as a tax resident in Portugal

After obtaining your NIF number, the next step in becoming a tax resident in Portugal is to register as one. This process involves changing the address on your NIF to show that you are residing in Portugal.

It’s important to keep in mind that once you change the address on your NIF, you are on a strict deadline to apply for the NHR status. For example, if you were to change your address on 31st December 2023, then you would only have until 31st March 2024 to apply for the NHR. The deadline to apply for the NHR is always 31st March of the following year, once you change your address.

Applying for NHR Status

Once you have obtained your NIF number and registered as a tax resident, you can apply for NHR status.

Applying for NHR status can be done online through the Portal das Finanças. This portal gives you access to everything related to your tax status in Portugal, including submitting your NHR application.

It is important to note that if you do not provide all the necessary information to request NHR status, your request may be denied. In this case, you will have to appeal, which can be a complex and costly process.
