Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to open a personal account?
The time it takes to open a bank account can vary depending on the type of account you’re opening, and in which country. We will be able to advise you once we begin to move forwards.
We cannot guarantee that your bank account will be opened by a specific date, as sometimes processes are out of our control (e.g. document processing, shipping times etc). Please also take into consideration that if you aren’t a resident of the country you’re applying for a personal bank account in, this can also extend the amount of time it takes to open an account.

Am I able to open a personal account before becoming a resident?
The answer to this depends on which country you require a bank account for, let’s explain in more detail –
- Malta: If you’re not a resident in Malta at the time of requesting a personal bank account then it can take months until the account is opened. This is the typical process when using high street banks, but it could be that when your application is submitted processes could take a shorter amount of time. Contact our team today to understand more.
- UAE: If you’re not a resident of the UAE, then you will not be able to open a personal bank account. However, if you would like to open a corporate bank account then this is possible.
- Portugal: If you’re not a resident in Portugal prior to applying for a personal bank account, you can still open one. Non-EU residents can submit a request for a temporary NIF. However, please bear in mind that you will need to request a fiscal representative before applying for a NIF, but don’t worry we can help you with this! EU residents are able to apply for a NIF straight away prior to opening a personal bank account – so the process is a lot simpler here.
Am I able to open a corporate account before becoming a resident?
This is dependent on which country you require a corporate bank account for, let’s explain below –
- Malta: Yes, you can open a corporate bank account if you’re not a Maltese resident. If you need help to set up a Maltese company we can help you do this, and the process will include the corporate bank account application.
- UAE: Yes, you can open a corporate bank account if you’re not a UAE resident, however the process is not easy as banks sometimes reject applications if the individual isn’t a UAE resident. However, there are still ways to open a corporate bank account and we advise people to get in touch with us so we can help you.
- Portugal: Yes! You’d just need a Portuguese NIF to get started and in some cases a Fiscal Representative – we can aid you in opening your corporate bank account, provided we have full information on your company. Speak to our experts to find out more.
If I open a company with RHJ Accountants is the bank account process included?
We will only include the bank account process cost if you’re opening a Maltese company. However if you’re opening a company in Portugal or the UAE, the bank account will show as a separate cost.
All this information is outlined to you following your initial meeting with our experts, and we will only proceed with a service once we have written agreement from you – so no hidden costs here!
